The gull flew in around 2:15, took a quick bath and departed roughly 10 minutes later. I first tried to digiscope it; but failing at that - I switched to the DSLR. Although it was fairly distant the shots turned out to be identifiable – at least to the “Mew/Common/Heinei/Kamchatka Gull” level. The back was noticably darker than nearby Herring Gulls, it had a rounded head with a fair bit of dark markings. The bill was small and appeared two-toned - greenish at the base base and with a brighter yellow tip. The primaries had extensive black and white mirrors of P9 and P10. P8 appeared to be entirely black. Just before it departed it settled on the ice with a small group of Ring-billed Gull. The distance there was too great for getting any pictures; but looking though the scope at ~50X the bird appeared to be roughly the same size and build as the Ringers. This is most likely the same bird that was first found by Rick Heil on November 26, 2009, photographed by Phil Brown on Dec. 7, and again by James Smith and Nick Bonomo on January 21, 2010. |
